The Overlooked Power of Stories: How To Invite Yourself, Others, & The Universe Into A More Compelling Future
Neuron #17: Stories Are Invitations

As author and modern-day philosopher Charles Eisenstein taught me, the story you tell yourself about yourself invites you deeper into that story.
Simply said, stories are invitations.
Hold a negative story in your mind and you will invite yourself into that reality.
Hold an empowering story in your mind and you will invite yourself into that reality.
Now, here’s where the work begins.
Oftentimes, you will find a mountain of evidence that contradicts your story. You might be starting out on a new life path, relationship, or project. And although you are telling yourself that you are strong, life is kicking your ass.
The real work is to hold the story that you want to live, as you are in the midst of battle, doubt, and fear.
Keep inviting yourself into the future, even when everything and everyone is screaming otherwise.
Don’t get caught up on the evidence of the present. The evidence of the present has to catch up with your future, and that can take time.
Additionally, there is a much deeper and more powerful application of story.
Let’s look at the world around you.
Whether or not you realize it, you carry great responsibility.
Reflect on this.
What is the story you have been holding about the people in your life? Look at your close relationships and your co-workers. How do you see them?
The people around you will often have a disempowering story about themselves. But you have the power to hold a contrarian story that invites them out of that. And you have the power to invite yourself out of the negative relationship you might hold with them.
By holding a new story, you give them the space to become someone new, which gives you the space to shift that relationship.
It is not necessary to tell them the story you are holding. Just silently serve that invitation with the quality of your being.
Next, what is the story you have been holding about the universe itself? Look at what you believe is the purpose, meaning, and direction of this mystery of life. As Albert Einstein said, “The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe.”
I don’t know what the universe’s story is. But I do know that we get to co-author it. With our storytelling minds, we can genuinely invite the universe into a new chapter.
Every word, every story, every invitation is an act of service. To yourself and to life itself.
Stay conscious of the stories you are writing.
Love, Connor
