The Battle-Tested Self-Reflection Method To Quiet Your Mind, Access Your Intuition, Spark Your Creativity, Excavate Who You Are, & Change The Trajectory of Your Life

Neuron #12: Excavate The Self

Did you know that there are 1,113,527 known asteroids floating around in the universe?

Asteroids are rocky remnants from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago, which can be found orbiting the Sun.

Inside of your head exists a similar asteroid field. You have floating rubble left over from the formation of you many years ago.

These inner asteroids appear in the form of your conscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings, and habits, most of which repetitively run the show in your life and prevent you from getting in touch with who you really are.

Similarly to the outer asteroids that orbit the sun, they create a thick noisy barrier that is often very difficult to break through.

So, how do we excavate the self beyond this asteroid field?

Self reflection.

That means articulating, writing, expressing, speaking, verbalizing, wordsmithing. A LOT.

By articulating the surface-level asteroids, you move beyond that barrier and into the space of the unknown where you discover who you are.

Here’s the practice:

  • Grab something to capture your thoughts with (pen and paper, laptop, voice recorder, video camera)

  • Set a timer for 45 minutes. At least.

  • Write. Speak. “Braindump” everything. Repeat. Ad nauseum.

At first, your sole intention is to articulate EVERYTHING in your stream of consciousness: your to do list, your worries, your fears, your desires, things you forgot about but just remembered, so on and so forth.

To journey into the the deeper aspects of self beyond the asteroid field, you first must follow this stream to exhaustion.

Eventually (usually ~20 minutes into a journaling session, depending on how much “backlog” you have) you get to a point at which you feel you have articulated most of the predictable surface-level stuff.

Your mind will get quieter and you might ask yourself, “So, what do I write now? Geez, there is still a TON of time left.”

This is a sign that you are starting to create the space for unknown thoughts, desires, and feelings to come through.

Next, you must ask yourself questions that you rarely—or never—ask yourself to tease out what's beyond surface level.

But only you know what questions to ask to reveal the unspoken wisdom within you beyond the asteroids.

When I am really feeling disconnected from myself, and unclear on who I am or what I want, I return to this practice.

For example, I did this for 60 minutes every morning (directly after meditation when my mind is most coherent) for a month straight. And it completely shifted the trajectory of my life.

In this reflective space, I started to teach myself how to live again. I remembered the wisdom that I had forgotten and was not practicing. I formulated new visions for my life. New creative ideas appeared. I started connecting the dots of my past with my future. My intuition spoke louder than my monkey mind. Curiosities began to surface. More aligned goals were set. And passion and inspiration flowed.

If 1,800 minutes (60 minutes * 30 days) sounds like too much work, remember this: there is no price too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Imagine not doing this and spending the next 35 years living someone else’s life.

Now, go dive full on into the process of self-excavation.

Otherwise, you will spend your entire life floating in the asteroidal rubble of your mind, just as most of society does.

Love, Connor

P.S. - I am launching a (free) program to teach you how to create your own self-guided musical meditation track called a Compass. Your Compass is a tool created by you and for you that teaches yourself how to live. It's the MOST effective personal growth strategy I've ever experienced. The second cohort starts Dec. 1st.
